When to Choose a Sliding Window over Other Windows

Whether you choose a sliding window, a double hung window or some other window, the choice will most likely be based on aesthetics and ease of use.

  • Aesthetics: A sliding window has a more contemporary look than a double hung. So if you live in a more modern home, or if you just like the way sliding windows look, then by all means choose them. They can be just as energy efficient, durable, and easy to clean as a double hung.

  • Ease of Use: There are times when it’s just easier to open and close a sliding window rather than a double hung. For instance, windows that are behind a kitchen or bathroom counter can be difficult to reach. Sliders in this situation are easier to open than double hungs. People who have mobility problems with their arms, i.e. trouble lifting their hands up to their shoulders, or people who are in wheelchairs, often choose sliding windows over double hungs. Because the sashes in sliders move side-to-side there is no need to push up on the sash to lift it.

  • Cleaning: The easiest type of window to clean is one designed so the sashes tip in for cleaning of both sides. Most sliding window sashes don’t do that. But Soft-Lite offers the Tilt-N-Slide model. The sashes on this style of sliding window are hinged in a way that allows them to be pivoted into the room for easy cleaning.
