On October 23, 2023, ENERGY STAR 7.0 requirements for residential windows, doors, and skylights went into effect. This new criteria includes a significant jump in energy efficiency requirements for windows, sliding glass doors, and entry doors to receive certification.
ENERGY STAR 7.0 increases the requirements for U-Factor and SHGC. U-Factor indicates how well a window or door insulates, with a number up to 1.20. A lower U-Factor insulates better. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient, or SHGC, measures how well a window or door blocks sunlight heat from entering your home, from 0-1. A lower number allows less heat transmission.
ENERGY STAR’s Climate Zone Map breaks the USA into four zones, each with its own U-Factor and SHGC requirements that have become relatively more strict in each zone to improve homeowners’ energy efficiency.
