Double hung windows include two sashes that both move up and down, so homeowners can open the window from the bottom or the top. They get their name from the double set of sashes.
They’re the most commonly used window in the USA today. Traditionally, they were hung from counterweights inside the window frame. The counterweights allowed the sashes to be lifted with less effort. They also allowed the sash to stay in position while raised.
Today, double hung windows rarely use counterweights. Instead, either spring balances or steel coils are used to balance the weight of the sash as it is raised and lowered.

We are loving our windows so far! Our 40-year-old house had all original windows, which were single-paned and in rather poor shape (some wouldn't open, the ones that would open wouldn't stay open, no screens, etc).
