Are Double Hung Vinyl Windows Better Than Single Hungs?
As with most choices in life the right answer depends on personal preference.
When it comes to your home, Soft-Lite knows everyone has their own personal preferences. That’s why we offer nearly every combination of ease, affordability, comfort, and energy efficiency possible in our windows.
- Two sashes that lift: The most common reason for choosing double hung vinyl windows is that both sashes move up and down. In single hungs only the bottom sash lifts up. This makes cleaning the top sash more difficult. An added benefit of Soft-Lite’s double hung windows is that both sashes tilt in, making cleaning of the exterior surface a snap.
- Affordability: Typically single hungs are less expensive than double hung vinyl windows because the top sash doesn’t require an operating mechanism. Many home builders choose single hungs to keep their costs down.
- Air Infiltration: With the rising costs of heating and cooling your home, Soft-Lite knows that air infiltration is a top concern for nearly everyone. Soft-Lite’s single hung and double hung vinyl windows are designed with both air and water barriers and at least two strips of weather stripping around the sash perimeter. When you choose a Soft-Lite window, you can rest easy, knowing you’re getting the best air infiltration ratings in the business.
- Energy Efficiency: In addition to the frame and sash construction, the energy efficiency of a single hung or double hung vinyl window depends on the type of glass selected. Windows with foam insulation in the sash and frame as well as a triple-pane glass unit will be much more energy efficient than those with less. Choose between windows with and without foam insulation and from Soft-Lite’s over 20 different glass packages to select the right amount of energy efficiency for your home.
