5 Signs You Need to Replace Your Windows

Windows are a critical consideration for every homeowner. Old or inefficient windows will lead to higher utility bills, a lower home resale value, potential damage to your house, and safety concerns for you and your family.

Here are 5 easy ways to check if you need to replace your windows:

1. How old are your windows?

Are your windows more than 20 years old? If yes, it’s definitely time to consider an upgrade. Window technology has come a long way in the last 20 years.

2. Use a flame to test for drafts.

Hold a lighter or candle next to your window, and see if the flame flickers. If it does, you have a draft. And that draft is probably costing you hundreds of dollars in utility bills each year.

3. Check for condensation.

Have you noticed any water condensing or dripping between your window panes? That’s a sign of a bad glass seal. You may be able to get away with replacing just the glass panes, depending on the age, style and manufacturer of the window. But in most cases, a full window replacement is the best solution.

4. Consider the need for impact windows.

Do you live in a high velocity hurricane zone? In these areas, ensuring you have ASTM Impact Level D tested & approved windows are extremely important to the structure and safety of your home. In some states, impact resistant windows are becoming an absolute requirement for new buildings.

5. Check security features.

Have you had difficulty opening, closing or locking your windows? Operational malfunctions aren’t just annoying. They can lead to balance and sealing issues, as well as security concerns. Your window should be as secure as your front door. Robbers are happy to use either to get into your house.

Your safety, comfort, and finances are absolutely dependent on the quality of your windows. Take 5 minutes to ensure that yours are meeting your needs. And if they’re not, find a window dealer near you before a little problem becomes a bigger one.
